Rockland and its surrounding communities were first served by St. David’s Catholic Church, which was built in 1858, and subsequently destroyed by a fire in 1889. On August 20th of the same year, the cornerstone was placed for a new church. The Feast of St. Bernard fell on this date, leading to a change in names from St. David’s to St. Bernard’s. From this point on, St. Bernard’s became synonymous with Rockland Catholicism. In 1974, ground was broken for a new St. Bernard’s Church, which is the one that stands today. Throughout all this history, the faithful have flocked to these three different church buildings, a legacy which is attested to by the nearly 540 different families that attend in the present day.
